UAE (Dubai) tax residency, explained
The UAE introduced a personal income-tax residence regime in 2022 (Cabinet Decision No. 85) — and got the incentives exactly backwards from most countries: becoming a UAE resident costs you almost nothing in UAE tax. The rules matter for the treaty access they unlock and for how your other countries treat you.
The two day routes
- 183 days, always. Physical presence in the UAE for 183 days or more in a relevant 12-month period — with a valid residence permit — makes you a UAE tax resident.
- 90 days, with substance. Presence of 90–182 days also makes you resident when you additionally hold a permanent place of residence in the UAE or conduct a business there. That substance condition is exactly what a day calculator cannot see — our UAE calculator shows that band honestly as "unclear".
The window trap
The Decision's "relevant period" is any consecutive twelve months — not the calendar year. A stay from October to March fits inside one statutory window but straddles two calendar years; a calendar-year tool can quietly understate the same pattern. If your planning leans on boundary-crossing stays, check the 12-month windows manually.
What UAE residency actually changes
- Almost no UAE tax on personal income — salaries and most personal income carry no income tax.
- Treaty access — the UAE's treaty network can reduce withholding elsewhere and supports certificate-of-residence requests.
- The other direction matters more — exiting your previous country (its 183-day test, its exit taxes, its "centre of life" review) is where the real exposure sits. The UAE–X treaty tie-breaker decides conflicts — walk the cascade.
